Edisto Island
Edisto, made up of just over 70 square miles, is a bit unlike any other barrier island along Charleston’s Coast. It remains rural with the exception of a few gated subdivisions. There are vast stretches of undeveloped land and the island is a nature lover’s paradise. Deer, dolphin and blue heron storks are species that are seen almost every day. The waterways are breathtaking and there are many, as Edisto is actually made up of sub-islands separated by tidal creeks and marshes.
There are no plans to change Edisto. The locals like it just the way it is – a friendly laid back working community with Mom and Pop businesses and no high-rise condominiums or hotels. The locals do appreciate the tourists that come to visit and treat them to some of the best southern hospitality and offer plenty of recreational activities. There are two marinas and three boat landings, a state park with more than 4 miles of sandy beaches, and a golf course. Just 45 minutes south of Charleston, Edisto is in close proximity to the City of Charleston, yet feels like a world away.

A Bit of Edisto History
In 1674 the Edistow Indian Tribe sold the island to the Earl of Shaftsbury. Shaftsbury was one of the original Lord Proprietors settling Charleston. Like most of the Lowcountry, initially rice and indigo were the choice crops to grow here. But then came cotton. Sea Island Cotton became world famous and the industry brought great prosperity. This is easily seen at the historic homes that still stand today on Edisto. After the Civil War, the cotton industry went into decline and the people of Edisto began making their living farming, shrimping and fishing. During the 1920s Edisto Beach became a get away for South Carolinians. It is said that they waited for low tide and then crossed the marsh areas by driving across oyster shells.
